This past Saturday, November 14, the First Annual Massachusetts Trails Conference was held. Over one hundred trail enthusiast attended the day-long event presented by The Massachusetts Recreational Trail Advisory Board (MARTAB) in partnership with the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Trustees of Reservations. The goal of the conference was to build a statewide-based coalition of trail advocates in Massachusetts by focusing on strengthening capacity and community across the spectrum of trails enthusiasts and supporters.

SAM Delegate and MARTAB member Dean Zuppio along with SAM president Dan Gould represented the perspective of the snowmobiler. They attended several workshops and round-table discussions, sharing their insight of trail management by volunteers.

SAM was one of five groups chosen to deliver a presentation about trail success stories. The presentation focused on SAM’s core group of club volunteers and the trail corridor that we manage, along with the ongoing trails protection program that has been instituted. Special thanks to Randy Toth and Rena Sumner for preparing the PowerPoint.

Attendees were impressed by the accomplishments of SAM clubs. It was a very successful weekend and brought to light the commonality that different trail users have rather than differences.
