A B-52 left Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts on January 24, 1963 and later crashed on Elephant Mountain in Greenville Maine. The site, which is accessible by snowmobile, is visited by thousands every year.
The Bangor Daily New reports that a community effort, that includes snowmobilers, is under way to further protect the memorial site of the crashed bomber where seven airmen perished and two survivors where rescued.
Gerry Balchuinas wrote about his ride to the memorial.
