The heat waves of July are behind us, it’s time to talk snow. Winter forecasts this far in advance can raise eyebrows but that has never stopped the Farmers’ Almanac.
Farmers’ Almanac predict a cold, snowy winter for 2014, proclaiming “The Days of Shivery are back!” They go on to report “For 2013–2014, we are forecasting a winter that will experience below average temperatures for about two-thirds of the nation. A large area of below-normal temperatures will predominate from roughly east of the Continental Divide to the Appalachians, north and east through New England.”
“With a combination of below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation the stage will be set for Central and Northern New England to receive lots of snow.”
They stress that February and March will be a snowmobiler’s dream come true. “We are “red-flagging” the first ten days of February for possible heavy winter weather.” “And mid-March could bring a wave of storminess stretching almost from coast to coast, bringing a wide variety of precipitation types as well as strong and gusty winds.”
The farmers’ Almanac point out that they forecast last winter’s blizzard and the severe heat wave this past summer. In addition, they claim an accuracy rate of 80% since the predictions started in 1818.
